Fireworks were on display at the Crystal City Hilton in Arlington, VA Friday night. A parade of knockouts over nine-bouts had the crowd in a frenzy from the start. A ballroom that was transformed into a fight hall made for a cozy setting for the evening. Spectators were close to the action and could hear the thunder from leather finding flesh and feel the impact reverberate from the ring as fighter after fighter tasted the canvas. Judges could have taken the night off as all fights were decided in the ring.
The card was promoted by Kings Promotions and featured Junior Welterweights, Mykal "The Professor" Fox of Forestville, MD against Somner "Magic Man" Martin of Martinsburg, VA. On this evening it was the lanky Fox who brought out all the tricks, with a heavy display of jabs setting up two and three-punch combinations. He was clearly controlling the fight after two rounds, eventually making Martin disappear at 1:53 in the third round after knocking him down minutes earlier. Fox's record improved to 11-0 with three KO's.
In the co-main event, two undefeated heavy weights collided to determine who would continue their winning path. Luther "Lights Out" Smith from Bowie, MD and Mike "Silverback" Balogun from Upper Marlboro, MD live in towns separated by less than 15 miles. This bout would be for local bragging rights. Smith at 211 pounds, gave up 23 pounds to the heavier Balogun who came in weighing 234. After a feeling out process in the first round, Balogun used his size advantage to smother Smith with pressure, knocking him down twice in the second round with violent right hooks. By the time Smith was dropped for the third time, the contest was decided as the bout was stopped at 1:32 in the second. Balogun continues his undefeated streak at 7-0 with six KO's.
While most of the contests were pretty one-sided for the evening, the fans were enjoying the show and having a good time. The size of the venue gave the event a lounge type feel. Each of the D.C. and Maryland based fighters had a good show of support from family and friends. Food and drinks were reasonably priced and no one left without cheering for someone.
